FREAKY FRIDAY Sequel in The Works at Disney with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan
Disney is officially moving forward with a sequel to the classic 2003 body-swap comedy Freaky Friday. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are expected to reprise their roles.
Curtis and Lohan have both been open to reprising their roles for a sequel. Curtis previously came out and said she’d love to return for a sequel, and she brought the idea to Disney. She also shared: “There is no scheduled date, but we’re talking. People are talking. The right people are talking.”
Curtis also said she and Lohan discussed their possible big screen reunion, saying: “I’m 64 in a week and Lindsay is 36…[A sequel] lends itself so beautifully. We’re both committed to it, and it’s not ours to make. It’s Disney’s to make and I think they’re interested and we’re talking.”
All the talking has led to the project going into development and Elyse Hollander (Birdman) is currently writing the script.
The original movie tells the story of a mother and daughter who magically switch bodies and have to live each other's lives for a day. Anna Coleman (Lohan) is a rebellious teenage girl who has trouble getting along with her mother, Tess (Curtis), a workaholic and overbearing therapist. After a heated argument, they both make a wish at the same time and wake up the next morning in each other's bodies.
They have to navigate each other's lives, with Anna having to deal with Tess's patients and professional responsibilities, while Tess has to attend Anna's band practice and deal with her school and social life. Along the way, they learn to understand and appreciate each other's struggles and come to a deeper understanding of their relationship.
The movie is a heartwarming and funny story that explores the generation gap between parents and teenagers.
