Harrison Ford on His Final Ride as Indiana Jones and Wanting to See Him on One More "Unexpected, Unanticipated Adventure"
As we all know, Harrison Ford’s time as Indiana Jones is coming to an end. His final adventure will be told in director James Mangold and producer Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny. This looks like it might actually be the great Indiana Jones movie we’re all hoping for! At least, I’m excited about it!
During a recent interview with Total Film, Ford opened up about playing this iconic role one final time: "This is the final film in the series, and this is the last time I’ll play the character. I anticipate that it will be the last time that he appears in a film."
He went on to talk about how he has “always wanted to see a completion of the character," and added: “I wanted to see [Indiana Jones] at a later stage of his life, when he’s beyond the youthful enthusiasm and capacity, and beset by age and [stifled by academia]. I wanted to see him engage on one more unexpected, unanticipated adventure."
That adventure is set in 1969 during the Space Race, with Jones finding himself as “a man out of time” facing off with Voller, a NASA member and ex-Nazi involved with the Moon landing program, who wants to "rectify the world and make it into a better place as he sees fit." He’s looking to correct the mistakes that Hitler made when he was in power with the Dial of Destiney artifact.
The moon-landing program “was run by a bunch of ex-Nazis. How ‘ex’ they are is the question. And it gets up Indy’s nose. It’s not just that the model of what a hero is has completely changed. It’s not just that they’re looking for something where there’s nothing up there – it’s like Reno without the gambling, or whatever his line is. But the people that are behind it are, you know, his sworn enemies.”
Ford added how happy he was to be about to make this film saying: "I had been ambitious to do this film for 10 years, and there finally came a time when we all committed to that. It was a joyous moment for me. I think it’s a rare situation that I find myself in.”
When asked if Ford would be involved with the TV series that was in development at Disney+, the actor said he will "not be involved in that, if it does come to fruition." The last we heard is that the series was not moving forward, anyway, which is probably for the best.
Ford concluded by saying that he’s going to end his time as Indiana Jones with a Bang: "I’ve been able to deliver amazing films developed by Steven [Spielberg] and George [Lucas] over a 40-year period, and to end it not with a whimper, but a bang, has been my greatest ambition for this excursion."
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is out in cinemas in theaters on June 30th. I included a couple in images below.
