INDIANA JONES 5 Director James Mangold is Not Interested in Making a Phoebe Waller-Bridge Spinoff

As you know, Disney and Lucasfilm have been looking to continue the Indiana Jones franchise without Indiana Jones. At one point, they were taking pitches for a spinoff series, but Harrison Ford is 100% done with the character now. So, whatever happens, next will not involve Jones.

Some people think that the upcoming movie, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will set up Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character Helena Shaw as the character that will take over the franchise. While that very well could happen, director James Mangold is not interested in that. He told Variety:

"I'm not interested. I refuse. I just can't do it. The amount of lore and Easter eggs and fan service starts to become antithetical to any of this stuff at a certain point. It isn't storytelling anymore. It's large-scale advertising."

Now, just because he won’t do it, doesn’t mean that Lucasfilm and Disney won’t bring someone else in that would. I actually enjoyed Waller-Bridge’s character in Dial of Destiny! Helena Shaw is Indy's goddaughter in the movie, which is why people think this will be the most likely spinoff.

Personally, I think the Indiana Jones franchise should end with this movie. Really, what’s the point without Ford? However, if they do try to keep the franchise alive, the one thing that would work, that fans would be happy with, is a series that focuses on the adventures of Ke Huy Quan’s Short Round.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously talked about the franchise continuing, saying it's "entirely possible" but "we're not having any of those conversations right now. We're just focused on finishing this with Harrison."

Regardless of what happens with the franchise in the future, just enjoy this final adventure of Ford’s Indiana Jones in The Dial of Destiny!
