James Gunn Offers Insight on SUPERMAN: LEGACY Costumes
Superman: Legacy writer and director James Gunn has been bombarded by fan questions and requests regarding the costumes in the upcoming film, most of them specifically for the Superman costume that David Corenswet will wear.
At one point a fan reached out to Gunn on his Threads account and asked Gunn to not have the red trunks on the outside of Superman’s costume. The filmmaker decided to respond to this and offer some insight on the costume and share his thoughts on this aspect of the film. He said:
“You wouldn’t believe the amount of pleading and upset I get based around trunks or no trunks. To me, not the most important aspect of Superman or his story. But so many strong feelings!”
He then shared his thoughts on Superman’s costume and its many variations, and how pretty much all of his costumes are valid:
“This might be an extreme point of view. The costume has changed in many, many ways throughout the years. They are all (or mostly all) valid versions of Superman, with or without trunks, with or without yellow S on cape. with or without black around the S, with or without mullet, and on and on and on.”
I couldn't care less about the Superman costume. In the end, I know that we are going to see a new Superman costume that’s inspired by the costumes in the comics. I just want Gunn to nail the story for Superman!
Superman is one of the most beloved comic book superheroes ever created, and I can’t wait to see what Gunn has planned for him. With all of the characters that Gunn is bringing to the film, his plans are ambitious and I just want him so badly to pull off something incredible, something that will leave fans in awe.
The film also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, and María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica, aka The Engineer. There’s also Sara Sampaio, who has been cast as Eve Teschmacher, the assistant and sometimes mistress to the scheming villain Lex Luthor.
Superman: Legacy will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Superman: Legacy will launch the movie part of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. It’s scheduled for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
