James Gunn Says Superman Is the "Biggest Priority" DC Studios

As James Gunn and Peter Safran continue to plan out the future of the DC Cinematic Universe, fans are left wondering what the future of Superman holds. After all, Superman is one of the most popular comic book characters of all time.

Well, a fan recently reached out to Gunn asking him, “Please tell us if we are gonna see a Superman? We've been starved of the greatest comic book character on the big screen for ages!”

Gunn then responded saying, "Yes of course. Superman is a huge priority, if not the biggest priority." This really isn’t that surprising, of course, Superman is going to be in their plans! But, he does not specify if this Superman will be Henry Cavill.

So, while Superman is a big priority for the DC Studios, there’s still a chance that it won’t be Cavill. There have been several reports that Cavill’s version of the character may not fit in with Gunn and Safran’s plans and that his deal to return for a sequel was never set in stone.

At least we know that we’ll see a new Superman movie one day!

Gunn recently responded to all of all of the insider reports coming out including Wonder Woman 3 being canceled, Henry Cavill not coming back as Superman, Jason Momoa’s time as Aquaman being done after the upcoming sequel, and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam not getting a sequel. He said:

So. As for the story yesterday in the Hollywood Reporter, some of it is true, some of it is half-true, some of it is not true, & some of it we haven’t decided yet whether it’s true or not.

Although this first month at DC has been fruitful, building the next ten years of story takes time & we’re still just beginning.

Peter & I chose to helm DC Studios knowing we were coming into a fractious environment, both in the stories being told & in the audience itself & there would be an unavoidable transitional period as we moved into telling a cohesive story across film, TV, animation, and gaming.

But, in the end, the drawbacks of that transitional period were dwarfed by the creative possibilities & the opportunity to build upon what has worked in DC so far & to help rectify what has not.

We know we are not going to make every single person happy every step of the way, but we can promise everything we do is done in the service of the STORY & in the service of the DC CHARACTERS we know you cherish and we have cherished our whole lives.

As for more answers about the future of the DCU, I will sadly have to ask you to wait. We are giving these characters & the stories the time & attention they deserve & we ourselves still have a lot more questions to ask & answer.

What do you think Gunn and Safran are planning for Superman? Do you think they will bring Cavill back or do you think they will recast it? What do you want to see them do?
