James Gunn Shares His SUPERMAN Inspiration and It Looks Like the Superhero Is in Good Hands

James Gunn recently shared the pieces of Superman media have inspired his take on the iconic DC superhero. When asked by a fan on social media about his inspirations for Superman, aside from Richard Donner’s classic 1978 movie, Gunn replied with a collection of images.

The first image is from Superman #1 in 1939. The rest of the assembled images features Superman’s long history in comics, shows, and other media. I’ve included the Thread post below along with all of the images that Gunn shared.

Looking at all of these visuals that have inspired Gunn, its more proof to me that Gunn is the right guy for the job to take on Superman.

Superman will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”

Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent / Superman; Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaio, as Eve Teschmacher; and Terence Rosemore as Otis.

Superman will launch the movie part of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. It’s scheduled for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
