John Krasinski and Ryan Reynolds' Imaginary Friend Movie IF Gets a New Earlier Release Date
John Krasinski has been making a new movie with Ryan Reynolds titled If, and it’s a fantasy comedy that revolves around imaginary friends. The film was originally supposed to be released on May 24, 2024, and it’s now set to come out a week earlier on May 17th, which is great! With most movies getting pushed back, it’s nice to see the release of a film get pushed forward.
When previously talking about the film, Krasinski said that he wanted to make a movie for kids to enjoy in the same way that he enjoyed watching E.T. and The Goonies when he was growing up. He also brought together a great cast for the movie including Steve Carell, Matt Damon, Jon Stewart, Emily Blunt, Maya Rudolph, Sam Rockwell, Sebastian Maniscalco, Christopher Meloni, Richard Jenkins, Awkwafina, and Vince Vaughn. Other actors that were previously announced include Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Cailey Fleming, Louis Gossett Jr, Fiona Shaw, Alan S. Kim, and Bobby Moynihan.
The movie has a very Amblin-style vibe to it and it’s a mix of CGI animation and live-action. The story follows a young girl (Fleming) who is able to see and interact with all of the old imaginary friends of those around her. Imaginary friends that were dreamed up and created and then discarded.
One of the imaginary friends is IF, and IF is a furry purple creature that is voiced by Carrell. There are many other imaginary friend characters and they are voiced by the other cast members that were announced.
Reynolds described the movie as “a live-action pixar film,” and Krasinski, who wrote and directed it, said, “I want this movie to be believing in something bigger… and getting you through something bigger, that’s possible.”
