Lucasfilm and Marvel Studios Were Pressured by Disney to Announce Projects Before They Were Ready
As you know, there are a lot of projects that Lucasfilm announced over the years that never ended up actually being produced. There’s a reason for this, as none of these projects were ready to be announced because none of them were ready. But, it turns out that they were pressured by Disney Studios to announce all of these projects.
The revelation was made in the recently released book, MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, and not only were they pressuring Lucasfilm to make these announcements before the were ready, they were also pressuring Marvel Studios.
Some of these were happening under the leadership of now-ousted Disney CEO Bob Chapek, as both franchises were having a rough go under his brief tenure leading the Mouse House. Disney obviously was looking to get fans hyped for the future of these franchises, but in the end, it ended up becoming more an an annoyance. Now, every time Lucasfilm makes a film announcement, the fans are thinking, “Yeah, right. I’ll believe it when I see it.”
Some of the Star Wars projects that failed to become a reality are Rangers of the New Republic, Lando, A Droid Story, and Rogue Squadron. However, Lando is back on track and is now being developed as a movie by Stephen and Donald Glover.
There have been a lot of other Star Wars film projects announced over the years that never ended up going anywhere. Some of the other projects that have been announced over the years include Taika Waititi's Star Wars movie, which is the closest one to go into production. Rian Johnson's trilogy, Kevin Feige’s project, and the team behind Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, were also developing a big Star Wars project at one point that ended up being scrapped.
What’s funny, is that about a year ago, a report surfaced saying that Disney told Lucasfilm to stop announcing new Star Wars projects and creative collaborators. That was after Bob Iger came back.
