Matthew Lillard Says SCREAM Franchise Is in a "Good Place" but Explains Franchise Got "Too Violent"

Original Scream star Matthew Lillard recently shared his thoughts on the state of the Scream franchise. While he believes that the series is in a good place, he also explains that it the last Scream movie was too violent.

When asked about the franchise in an interview with GamesRadar+, the actor said: "I think it's in a good place. I think that [the movie being] back in the hands of Kevin Williamson is great.

“I love what [Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin] were doing before. nothing against them. In fact, I thought they were taking a really exciting way.”

He then explained: "I thought the movie got too violent. I think 6 was, like... I don't think Ghostface ever needs a shotgun. I think that the movies are – everything is trying to repeat what we did in the first movie in a lot of ways.

“Like, a maniacal monologue at the end. It's really hard to do. I hope that Kevin takes it in a brand new, brave, and exciting direction so that we can sort of find different colors and different joys."

Yeah, I agree with that. Ghostface never needed the shotgun. That took the franchise to a stupid level and kinda took the fun out of the franchise.

When previously talking about his character Stu Macher, Lillard believes that his character is alive as well and he talked about a potential return to the Scream saga.

He said: “Stu is definitely alive, right? My character Stu is definitely alive. I would love it. If it made sense for the franchise. If Kevin [Williamson] liked it. Then sure. Obviously.”

I would like to see Stu make a return to the franchise, but I doubt that’s something we’ll see because I don’t think Williamson will go that far to deliver fan-service. But, who knows!

That new movie will bring Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott back into the fold, and it was previously reported that Scream 7 "will have two main storylines, one about Sid and her friends from the neighborhood, and the second one about Sid's teen daughter Taylor (could be a codename) and her friends. Each of them will have to deal with Ghostface."

Sid and Gale will reportedly find themselves facing off with some kind of Ghostface cult.
