Milly Alcock Was First Person James Gunn Wanted for the Role of SUPERGIRL and Additional Insight

In the wake of the announcement of Milly Alcock being cast as Supergirl in the DCU, we’ve got some new details to share with you regarding writer and director James Gunn’s decision to cast the actress as well as some story details for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

Gunn took to social media today to say: “In case you missed this exciting news yesterday. Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter (Safran) for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics. I was watching House of the Dragon & thought she might have the edge, grace & authenticity we needed for the DCU’s Supergirl. And now here we are. Life is wild sometimes.”

It’s pretty cool that Gunn ended up casting the initial person that he thought of for the role of Supergirl. In a report from Variety, offered some additional insight on Gunn’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow saying:

They explain: “Ultimately, Gunn was looking to move away from previous depictions of the Girl of Steel, particularly the long-running CBS/CW series fronted by Melissa Benoist, and is aiming for a less earnest and more edgy version of the iconic superheroine. In the new iteration, Supergirl travels across the galaxy to celebrate her 21st birthday with Krypto the Superdog. Along the way, she meets a young woman named Ruthye and winds up on a murderous quest for revenge.”

The story details that are shared there are from the DC comic book Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, by writer Tom King. In that story: “Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but she now finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman’s fame. Just when Supergirl thinks she’s had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn’t help her, she’ll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.”
