Rachel Brosnahan Reveals the Type of Journalist Lois Lane Is in DC's SUPERMAN

Actress Rachel Brosnahan is taking on the daunting task of playing a character that fans have known and loved for decades.

Superman’s Lois Lane has been Clark Kent/Superman’s leading lady, as well as an award-winning journalist for the Metropolis newspaper the Daily Planet since she first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938. She has been portrayed in film and TV several times, and she is an important cog in the Superman story lines.

Because this new movie from James Gunn is a complete reboot, some fans have wondered how much he is planning on updating the story and characters for this modern day, and if that would affect the job titles of the characters.

As print journalism is a dying profession, could this film see Lois Lane pivot to broadcast, or another form of news? According to Brosnahan, that part of the story seems to be remaining true to the comics.

During a red carpet interview with Extra during fashion week, Brosnahan was asked about getting into the mindset of her character, and she said:

"I spoke to a handful of really brilliant journalists to help me kind of get inside the mindset of folks who have both worked in a newsroom and on broadcast, which Lois obviously doesn't but...still helpful. They were fantastic [and] very generous with their time."

Historically, fans don’t love huge, modern changes to classic comic characters and their storylines. So this is one less thing to worry about.

Gunn previously said this about his approach to the iconic couple in DC Studios' Superman:

"The relationship between Clark and Lois, I think, is unlike anything we’ve ever seen in any media, for Lois and Superman. When we were auditioning these actors for these roles, I wanted actors who had chemistry together.

“We had three actors for Superman, and three actors for Lois, and we put them all together. David and Rachel were incredible individually, but when we brought them together, there was an electricity in the room that was palpable."

"Part of it is the steaminess, the sexiness of it, but part of is just the way they bounce off of each other, in the way that 1940s movie stars do, with a Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in It Happened One Night.

“So it’s this miraculous energy between the two of them. When you see them together in the more loving aspects, you go, ‘Oh, these guys like each other in a real way’. It’s hot, but also in the way when they’re together, you go, 'Okay, I get it.'"

I am very optimistic about this movie. Gunn is a brilliant director who has put a lot of heart into the comic book stories he takes on.

The film also stars David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt / Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher; and Terence Rosemore as Otis.

Superman will launch the movie part of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. It’s scheduled for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025.
