Rey's New STAR WARS Movie Has Been in the Works for Years According to Kathleen Kennedy
One of the big movie announcements made at Star Wars Celebration over the weekend was that Daisy Ridley was teaming back up with Lucasfilm for a new project that would continue the story of Rey Skywalker. This movie was a surprise considering that Ridley had said that she was done playing the character after The Rise of Skywalker.
The film follows the events of Rise of Skywalker and will focus on Rey as she builds a new Jedi Order, and its set during a time when the “Jedi are in disarray.” It’s kind of funny because when aren’t the Jedi in disarray!?
According to Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, this project has actually been in development for years. She explained in an interview with Yahoo:
"We've been working on that [film] for a few years and all of that feeds into our overall storytelling. So we've just got to a point now where we've got a wonderful writer in Steven Knight, he's come on board and we're going to see a script probably in the next month and a half that we've been working on for quite a while. So we're getting close."
The film will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, but the fact that Peaky Blinders' Steven Knight is writing the script gives me hope for the project. I guess it all depends on if Kennedy and the Lucasfilm and Disney executives give the writer the freedom to tell a great story for Rey, or if they will cripple him and the story with studio notes.
Originally, Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson were attached to write the film, but they left the project after they turned in their script.
