Samuel L. Jackson Is Confused About Where Nick Fury Was During Certain Marvel Movies

Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury has had a long journey in the MCU and that journey is going to continue in the upcoming Marvel projects The Marvels and Secret Invasion. But, on his journey, there are Marvel movies where you’d expect him to show up, but he was nowhere to be found. Jackson has been thinking about these movies and wondering where Nick Fury was during some of these big Marvel events.

During an interview with Empire Magazine, while promoting his Secret Invasion series on Disney+, Jackson said:

"I was trying to figure out where I was during Civil War, when the kids were fighting and I wasn't there to say, 'Everybody go to your room.' Where was I during Endgame? It's harder for me not to be there, than be there."

Those are certainly reasonable questions! You’d think he would have been a part of those stories, but apparently, the reason he wasn’t included in Civil War is because the writers didn’t want to put Fury in a position where he’d have to pick a side. Christopher Markus explained:

"We didn't want him to take one side or the other, because that's not his place in the universe. And then we didn't want another, 'Is he still with the government? Is he opposed to the government but supporting the government?' It got to be the potential for a lot more polemic discussion that the movie did not have room for."

So they just pretended that Fury just wasn’t around… ok. I think that adding Fury into the mix would have added a very interesting dynamic to the whole thing, but I guess the writers didn’t want to try and figure it out. There was such a hard black-and-white line drawn in the sand in that story, and Fury would have added a little grey area to that.

As for not being involved in Avengers: Endgame, that’s easy to explain, as he was dusted in the post-credit scene for Avengers: Infinity War. He did come back in the final moments of Endgame, though, during Tony Stark's funeral sequence.

Secret Invasion is set in the present-day MCU, “Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill and the Skrull Talos, who has made a life for himself on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.”

The series also stars Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Martin Freeman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Charlayne Woodard, Killian Scott, Samuel Adewunmi, Dermot Mulroney, Christopher McDonald, Katie Finneran, with Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman, and Don Cheadle.

Secret Invasion will premiere on June 21st, exclusively on Disney+.
