Sarah Michelle Gellar Reveals Kathryn Newton Recreated Buffy’s Iconic Look in READY OF NOT 2

Nearly 30 years after she first stepped into Sunnydale High, Sarah Michelle Gellar is still inspiring a new generation of scream queens. This time, the love comes from her Ready or Not 2: Here I Come co-star Kathryn Newton, who slipped a sly Buffy the Vampire Slayer homage into the upcoming horror sequel.

While promoting Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, Gellar shared a fun behind-the-scenes moment that even she didn’t catch at first. Newton had done her homework and showed up ready to honor a certain iconic slayer.

“What’s really funny is I didn’t know any of this,” Gellar told Entertainment Tonight. “So, Kathryn brought in a picture of Buffy in this outfit. She had sort of had this idea of what it was.”

The outfit in question traces back to the March 10, 1997 pilot episode, “Welcome to the Hellmouth,” of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In that episode, Buffy rocks a blue button-down layered over a white tank top, paired with a messy updo and wispy bangs. It’s peak late ’90s Slayer style.

Gellar only realized what was happening once cameras were rolling.

“And then I’m in the first scene with her, and I was like, ‘You know, your outfit reminds me of something.’ And she was like, ‘Does it?’ And so, I have a great side-by-side. Yeah, the hairdo is exactly the same.”

Gellar’s Buffy Summers became a pop culture icon, the chosen Valley Girl balancing homework with apocalypses. Now, Gellar is stepping back into that world, reprising the role in the pilot for Hulu’s continuation, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale.

Meanwhile, Ready or Not 2 looks ready to up the chaos. After the explosive events of the first film, Grace, played by Samara Weaving, is still dealing with the fallout of surviving the deadly Le Domas wedding night.

This time, she reconnects with her estranged younger sister Faith, also the name of Buffy character, played by Newton, only to get pulled into another lethal showdown involving a new group of wealthy killers.

The cast is loaded with genre favorites. Gellar joins Shawn Hatosy, Néstor Carbonell, Kevin Durand, Olivia Cheng, and David Cronenberg, with Elijah Wood stepping in as the satanic cult’s lawyer.

Ready or Not 2: Here I Come is currently in theaters.
