SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK 2 Is Still in Development According to Director André Øvredal

It looks like the sequel to the 2019 horror film Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark is still in development! The horror franchise adapts the classic horrifying books written by Alvin Schwartz, and the first film did a great job with it! That film ended up offering some creepy fun entertainment!

The sequel was announced three years ago with André Øvredal set to return to direct, but there hasn’t been any update on the film since. Well, during an interview with IGN, Øvredal, who recently directed The Last Voyage of the Demeter, confirmed that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 is still in active development.

Øvredal said: “We have a story. We have a script. We’ve been working on the script as late as last year and even slightly into this year. The process obviously stopped with the strike — but it’s alive, for sure. COVID and then [Demeter] eating up two years of my life certainly put a dent in the progress.”

It’s good to know that the sequel isn’t dead because I’ve actually been looking forward to watching another Scary Stories film. Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman also returned to write the script. Guillermo del Toro is also involved and is said to be getting a “story by” credit.

The first film adapted horror tales from Alvin Schwartz’s three Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books, bringing Stephen Gammell’s terrifying illustrations to life for the first time. The sequel will be pulling from other tales in those nightmarish books.

During a previous interview, the director talked about diving deeper into bringing the ghastly art of Gemmell to life in the sequel, saying: “I learned so much on Scary Stories, but also about Scary Stories and I do think that we’ll tap even more into Gammell’s visual world in the sequel than we did in the first movie.”

In the original film, it’s 1968 in America. Change is blowing in the wind... but seemingly far removed from the unrest in the cities is the small town of Mill Valley where for generations, the shadow of the Bellows family has loomed large. It is in their mansion on the edge of town that Sarah, a young girl with horrible secrets, turned her tortured life into a series of scary stories, written in a book that has transcended time — stories that have a way of becoming all too real for a group of teenagers who discover Sarah’s terrifying home.

The first film ended with the hero of the story, Stella Nicholls, vowing to save her missing friends, taken by the various creatures that were unleashed throughout the film.
