STAR WARS Rumor Claims Lucasfilm Could Turn Dave Filoni’s Mandoverse Movie Into a Disney+ Event Series

For the last few years, the expectation has been that Dave Filoni would bring the stories of The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew together in one massive Star Wars crossover movie. It sounded like the perfect way to wrap up the New Republic era on the big screen.

Now, a new rumor suggests Lucasfilm may have completely different plans. According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Lucasfilm is reportedly reworking Heir to the Empire from a feature film into a limited Disney+ series.

If the report is accurate, the project would act as the grand finale for The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and Skeleton Crew, bringing all of those interconnected stories to an end in episodic form instead of a theatrical release.

As always, it's worth remembering that this hasn't been confirmed by Filoni, Lucasfilm, or Disney, so it's firmly in rumor territory for now. Still, it's an interesting possibility that would represent a major change in direction for the franchise.

While I’m not fully on board with this, the idea actually makes a lot of sense when you look at where Star Wars currently stands.

Lucasfilm recently attempted to bring this corner of the galaxy back to theaters with The Mandalorian & Grogu. While the film certainly had fans excited, it ultimately earned $345.16 million worldwide during its theatrical run, a result that reportedly fell short of Disney's expectations.

According to Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro, the movie didn't meet the company's box office goals. If Lucasfilm is reevaluating how it delivers the conclusion of the Mandoverse storyline, shifting the finale to Disney+ could be a practical move.

Instead of squeezing years of storytelling and a huge cast of characters into a single movie, a limited series would have much more room to explore the New Republic era, resolve lingering storylines, and give its characters the attention they deserve.

There's also the financial side of things. Producing a massive blockbuster comes with an enormous price tag, and after the performance of The Mandalorian & Grogu, it wouldn't be surprising if Lucasfilm decided that continuing the story on Disney+ carries far less risk.

I guess, from a storytelling perspective, the format also feels like a natural fit. The Mandoverse has always been built through interconnected television series, so ending those stories with one final limited series could feel more satisfying than jumping to a feature film.

It would essentially become the ultimate final season for this era of Star Wars, giving fans more time to spend with these characters while tying together years of plot threads.

Of course, Star Wars has traditionally saved its biggest moments for theaters, and a movie like this could be and epic big-screen event!

For now, this is still just a rumor, and plans can always change during development. But if Lucasfilm really is considering turning Heir to the Empire into a limited series, it could end up being the best way to give the Mandoverse the larger canvas it needs to deliver a satisfying conclusion.
