Steven Yuen is Reportedly Playing The Sentry in Marvel's THUNDERBOLTS and There Are Other Details
Some new details have been shared regarding Steven Yeun’s involvement with Marvel’s upcoming Thunderbolts movie. When Yeun’s casting was first announced his part was described as being “not only significant to this film but could also play a role going forward in future films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
It’s now being reported that Yeun will take on the role of The Sentry in the Marvel movie, and he’s a deranged and incredibly powerful character. The rumor comes from Hollywood insider CanWeGetSomeToast, and the character will be part of Val's Thunderbolts team and will be involved for the first two acts before "something rips him away from them."
It’s likely that the something that rips him away will be The Void, which is the dark entity that bonded to Bob Reynolds when he became the Sentry, and acts as a counterforce and embodiment of his negative aspects. It is more of a force than a person but can take any shape it chooses.
The Void is so powerful that it’s capable of destroying the Earth, and the entire universe if it wanted to. Reynolds fights a constant inner battle to keep the Void at bay as it comes into being every time he uses his powers and is his eternal nemesis, born in his own psyche.
The Sentry is a very interesting a complicated character and if Yuen is actually playing him, he’s going to be great in the role.
It was also reported that the character is going to be wearing a comic-accurate costume in the film, which will be fun.
It’ll be interesting to see how The Sentry is utilized in Thunderbolts, but I’m more curious about what his overall story arc will be over the course of his time in the MCU.
Yeun joins an ensemble cast in Thunderbolts that includes Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Julie Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, and of course, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. Then there’s Harrison Ford, who is taking on the role of General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross who is going to be President of the United States in Captain America: New World Order. Ayo Edebiri also joined the cast in an undisclosed role.
We don’t know much about what the story for Thunderbolts will entail, but recently learned a new detail about the Thunderbolts team from Kevin Feige, and he shared that Bucky Barnes is set to lead the team in the movie.
The film is being directed by Jake Schreier (Paper Towns, Kidding), from a script by Eric Pearson (Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow) and Kurt Busiek. Thunderbolts is currently set to be released in theaters on December 20, 2024.
What are your thoughts on Yuen possibly taking on the role of The Sentry in Thunderbolts?
