THE FLASH Had a Disappointing Opening Weekend at the Box Office
The Flash racing into theaters this weekend, and while it won at the box office, the result was pretty disappointing.
The film was projected to earn $70-$75 million at the box office domestically, but it ended up only making $55 million, which is a decent-sized blow to a film that had a $220 production budget, with a total of $330 million including marketing. It did make a total of $139 million worldwide.
While the film is good, audiences and fans just aren’t sure what to make of it. The film was made under the old regime at DC Entertainment and the whole DC Cinematic Universe is changing with the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-CEOs of DC Studios. The movie doesn’t really seem to have a solid place in the future of DC.
On top of that, there’s the whole Ezra Miller thing. As you know, the actor went through a crazy streak that ended up in trouble with the law. The bad press surrounding Miller certainly didn’t help the movie, and with the filmmakers wanting to continue working with them in any potential sequel, audiences and fans seem to have conflicting feelings over that.
Then there’s just the disappointing streak of DC movies that have been released over the years. The DC brand is just something that audiences are still wary about.
I actually thought that The Flash would do better at the box office than it did, especially with Michael Keaton returning as Batman, but that wasn’t enough to push it to the expected box office numbers.
I will say, I didn’t enjoy the movie as much the second time around. So it might not carry rewatchability as all the mistakes and issues stick out like a sour thumb the second time around. But, it’s still a fun movie. Regardless, I enjoyed the movie, but the audience has spoken. It's also received mixed reviews, with a barely-fresh 67% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes and a surprisingly low B CinemaScore.
What did you all think of The Flash? Are you surprised by the low box office numbers?
