There's Rumor Spreading That Taylor Swift Wrote ARGYLLE, But Director Matthew Vaughn Shut Those Down
In this age of social media madness, rumors start and spread like wildfire. It’s so ridiculous to see how fake news spreads so fast and how so many people believe it.
One of the most recent rumors that has been making the rounds is that Taylor Swift is the mysterious author, “Elly Conway,” behind the Argylle book that served as the inspiration for director Matthew Vaughn’’s upcoming action, spy, and comedy movie.
This has been circulating on social media for months. “Elly Conway” is a pseudonym for the writer whose manuscript was “so astonishing that it led to a reported $200 million deal for the film rights.” It was screenwriter Jason Fuchs who adapted the book into Vaughn’s movie.
So how did this rumor start? Swift fans became convinced that the she was the real “Elly Conway” due to her history of wearing argyle sweaters and because the film prominently features a Scottish Fold cat, which Swift owns two of.
Vaughn is finally shutting down this rumor saying: “I’m not a big internet guy, and it was actually my daughter who came up to me — this is the power of celebrity and the internet — and said, ‘You never told me Taylor wrote the book!’” And I’m looking at her going, ‘What are you talking about Taylor Swift wrote the book? She didn’t write the book!’ And I was laughing because I was like, ‘It’s not true! She didn’t write the book!’ But my daughter was convinced of it.”
He added: “There is a real book… and it’s a really good book. And there is an Elly Conway who wrote the book, but it’s not Taylor Swift. And I say that because I imagine Taylor Swift has a load of people trying to jump on her bandwagon left, right, and center, and I don’t want to be a part of that club. I did read the conspiracies and I was like, wow, they don’t leave a stone unturned! But it’s not Taylor Swift. She definitely didn’t write the book.”
But Vaughn did admit that Swift is the reason a Scottish Fold appears in the film. He said in an interview with Rolling Stone: “Ironically, what she is responsible for is the Scottish Fold. I got home one day, it was Christmas, and I was like, ‘What the f*ck is that noise?’ And I’m running around the house and I hear a noise, and the kids had seen a Taylor Swift documentary and there was a Scottish Fold in that, and they’d persuaded my wife, Claudia [Schiffer], to get them the kitten for Christmas. It was bought without my permission and hidden from me.”
Vaughn uses his family cat in the movie. Elly Conway is the main character in the film and she’s played by Bryce Dallas Howard. Conway, “the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past.
Accompanied by Aiden (Sam Rockwell), “a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur.”
The movie features an all-star cast that also includes Henry Cavill, John Cena, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston, Sofia Boutella, Ariana DeBose, Catherine O’Hara, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Argylle will be released in theaters on February 2, 2024.
