TRON: ARES is Set To Begin Production After The Holidays
It looks like Disney is gearing up to finally start shooting its long-awaited Tron sequel Tron: Ares. Director Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Kon Tiki) is prepping to start production after the holidays!
Jared Leto is set to star in the film and he’s joined by Cameron Monaghan (Star Wars Jedi), Evan Peters (WandaVision), Greta Lee, and Jodie Turner-Smith (Without Remorse).
As for the story, we know that it’s going to focus on the emergence of a sentient program that somehow crosses over into the human world. Leto will take on the role of Ares, which is the manifestation of the Tron program. Leto is said to be playing a video game programmer and tech CEO in what is described as the leading role.
Tron creator Steven Lisberger is also involved with the development of the film as a consultant, and he said: "The Tron team is hard at work. They are always hard at work. It's going to happen. My goal with these things in playing the Obi-Wan role is to say the one sentence that has an impact. I try to say something that is useful to them without getting into the weeds."
I was a lot more excited about Joseph Kosinski’s Tron: Ascension sequel, which ended up being scrapped as it was being developed. That movie was so close to happening, but Disney shut it down. It was a shame, but I do hope this next film delivers a great Tron story. Only time will tell.
