Charlize Theron Teams With JOHN WICK Directors For Spy Thriller THE COLDEST CITY
Last week, Lionsgate confirmed that Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, the directors of John Wick, would be returning for a sequel along with star Keanu Reeves. That isn't the only movie the directors are circling, but now they can add another project to their increasingly full plate.
Deadline reports that Stahelski and Leitch will direct Charlize Theron in The Coldest City, a film adaptation of writer Antony Johnston's graphic novel. Here's the synopsis from Amazon:
November 1989. Communism is collapsing, and soon the Berlin Wall will come down with it. But before that happens there is one last bit of cloak & dagger to attend to. Two weeks ago, an undercover MI6 officer was killed in Berlin. He was carrying information from a source in the East - a list that allegedly contains the name of every espionage agent working in Berlin, on all sides. No list was found on his body. Now Lorraine Broughton, an experienced spy with no pre-existing ties to Berlin, has been sent into this powder keg of social unrest, counter-espionage, defections gone bad and secret assassinations to bring back the list and save the lives of the British agents whose identities reside on it.
That sounds cool and everything, but I find it a little hard to believe that people are still using the NOC list from the first Mission: Impossible as a plot device. It seems like that has become too much of a cliche these days, and it's one of those MacGuffins that always makes me roll my eyes when it pops up in a movie or TV show. But Theron is great, and hopefully writer Kurt Johnstad (300, Act of Valor) can put an interesting spin on the concept and give her a great character to embody.
Theron can be seen in Mad Max: Fury Road starting this week, while Stahelski and Leitch have Cowboy Ninja Viking in the works as well as John Wick 2 and Bloodshot coming soon. Filming for The Coldest City begins in Germany this October, so unless they get going immediately on any of those other projects, this will be the next film of theirs that arrives in theaters.
