Charlie Cox Talks About Daredevil's Return on SHE-HULK and SPIDER-MAN NO WAY HOME Being "Really Weird"
After appearing Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Charlie Cox is set to make his big return as Matt Murdock aka Daredevil in the upcoming Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again. Vincent D’Onofrio will be joining him in that series as he is back as Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin.
Cox and D'Onofrio recently appeared together at ICCCon in Nashville, and during a panel, Cox addressed his return to the Marvel Universe, and talked about how playing this new iteration of the character was a "really weird" experience for him. He explained:
"It was really weird. And I'm older and so therefore he's older. So I think it was important ... for that to be a part of it. I don't know necessarily what I mean by that, but he's been through more. He's been through everything in some way. In some world, in some variant, he's been through what we've seen or not."
This definitely doesn’t feel like the same version of Daredevil from the Netflix series. Yes, it’s the same actor playing him, but he has a different tone, at least from what we’ve seen in the She-Hulk series. When talking about appearing in She-Hulk, and what made him different, he said:
"But She-Hulk was really fun because one of the things we didn't do a huge amount of in the original show — it was so dark so much of the time, he was so tortured that in the comics there was at times a lot of levity. There was a lot of fun and he's very charismatic and he's very funny at times. We didn't do too much of that. We didn't have much of that."
We still don’t really know what to expect from Daredevil: Born Again. I’ve personally been hoping for more of the tone of the original Netflix series, but I don’t think Marvel Studios is going to go that route. They’ve already made this tonal shift with the character, and I think they’re going to stick with it. Hopefully, the story they tell is strong.
Cox and D’Onofrio will be joined in the series by Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher. Other actors who have been cast in the series include Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva, and Sandrine Holt, who will play Vanessa Fisk, the wife of Fisk. Michael Gaston (Chicago P.D., Mayor of Kingstown) is also in the show.
The series is being written and executive produced by Matt Corman and Chris Ord, and it’s expected to be released in the spring of 2024. Cuesta is only directing the opening episode, and other directors are being lined up to helm the other blocks of episodes.
There are no details on what the story for the series will tell, but fans are extremely curious. During a previous interview, Charlie Cox offered some insight on what we can expect from his character, saying: "I don't think it's a different character. I just think it's maybe a different period of his life. I don't think my interpretation will change -- they hired the same actor. We're saying this is a whole new… era, or variant? I haven't read the scripts, so I don't know. But like, it's part of the multiverse?"
Cox also previously shared that the series will be “a whole new thing,” saying: “I think that the sense is it is a new beginning, it is going to be different, it is going to be totally different. It is going to be new stories, and new ideas. It is a Season 1, it is not Season 4, so it is a whole new thing. Which I think is the way to go. If you are going to do it again, do it differently.”
Are you looking forward to the new Daredevil series?
