Dave Filoni's STAR WARS Movie Will Reportedly Become a Series if THE MANDALORIAN & GROGU Flops
Lucasfilm has big and ambitious plans for the interconnected Star Wars narrative unfolding through The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and the other spinoff series.
Back in 2023, the studio announced that Dave Filoni would direct a feature film to cap off this New Republic story arc. But according to industry insiders, this epic conclusion could pivot from a movie to a series, depending on how Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu performs at the box office.
Industry scooper Daniel Richtman recently claimed that Lucasfilm might adjust its approach based on the film’s financial success.
He said: “If the Mando film flops, they’ll reconsider their plans and turn the crossover film into a miniseries.” He also noted “Lucasfilm is reportedly going to play it 'safe' with their shows moving forward - whatever that means."
The untitled crossover project is set in the New Republic era, focusing on the growing conflict between the Imperial Remnant and the fledgling New Republic.
This storyline will tie together threads introduced in The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, making it a climactic chapter in the ongoing saga.
As of right now, Filoni is currently focused on developing Ahsoka Season 2, and when previously talking about that, he said:
"I'm so well into that as well. I've been writing it, and I'm still the single writer on it, and so I've been enjoying doing that, but it's a challenge, of course, and working some of these arcs through has been a challenge and making sure it's all going to come out in a way that I think is exciting for fans.”
Filoni continued: "I know that they're interested in where some of the things I developed in Season 1. I'm pretty happy with it. Love working with Rosario [Dawson], so I can’t wait to get back to that."
When talking about The Manadlorian & Grogu movie, Filoni said: "I'm very excited about it as well. Jon and I had a great time working on that, as we always do.
“It was great seeing Grogu. He's become such a star, and it's amazing how it's evolved, what we can do now with the puppetry compared to Season 1 and where we are today in a film working with the team which I worked quite a bit with them on the puppetry."
"Legacy effects did a fantastic job, and what a wonderful little creation Grogu is.”
The Mandalorian & Grogu is set to hit theaters on May 22, 2026, and I hope that it ends up being a success at the box office so that Filoni gets to make his Star Wars movie. The creative team just needs to deliver a great Star Wars film!
