David Corenswet Top Choice For Superman in SUPERMAN: LEGACY; Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult Also Up For Roles
James Gunn has been busy meeting with actors to take on the lead roles in his upcoming Superman: Legacy film and his top choice to take on the role of Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman is David Corenswet. I’m sure that name doesn’t ring a bell for anyone as the biggest film role he’s had was in Ti West and Mia Goth’s horror film Pearl. He also appeared in shows such as Hollywood and The Politician.
He definitely has the Superman look, almost like a slightly younger version of Henry Cavill! While Corenswet is Gunn’s top choice, I’ve heard that he is still testing other actors for the role of the studio. But, if Gunn gets his way, Corenswet will be the new Man of Steel. There are two other actors said to be in the mix. I do like that Gunn is going for a most unknown actor for the part.
THR is also reporting that Rachel Brosnahan, of Amazon’s acclaimed The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, is up for the role of Lois Lane. I really like that casting, but other actresses in the running include Samara Weaving (Ready or Not), Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton), and Emma Mackey (Sex Education).
Brosnahan is said to have delivered an “outstanding” audition and I think she’s the best choice, but at 32 years old, “she may be in the older range for what Gunn is ultimately hoping to achieve, a look Metropolis heroics via 20-something characters.” Which, I hope isn’t the case. If she had an outstanding audition, freakin’ cast her!
It’s also being reported that Nicholas Hoult (Renfeild) is up for the role of classic DC villain Lex Luthor. It’s explained that “Hoult’s name has been swirling around Legacy for several weeks now with some theorizing he was up for Superman.”
Hoult was the runner-up for Batman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, but the role ultimately went to Robert Pattinson. According to an inside source: “The studio has loved him since Fury Road,” so they want to keep working with him. There’s a very strong chance he’ll end up in Superman: Legacy.
The report says that some of these actors are not screen testing and have merely been in the mix. Another source dismissed some of the names as “a chatroom list.” As you might expect, Warners had no comment and one insider said the filmmakers and studio “are nowhere near a decision.” As for what Gunn had to say, he shared on Twitter:
For all of you asking, I would never comment on who is or isn’t AUDITIONING for a role. That’s the actor’s business only & isn’t something I’d make public unless they did it first after the fact (like @GlennHowerton or @ZacharyLevi having auditioned for Star-Lord & being top choices). For now, only one person has been CAST in Superman: Legacy, and it isn’t any of the regular players in the Superman world.”
The movie will introduce a new version of Superman, and it will tell the story of “Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.”
Superman: Legacy will launch the movie part of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1, and that will be followed by The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl, Swamp Thing, and more.
Pre-production on the movie kicked off last month, with costumes, production design “and more” now “up and running.”
What are your thoughts on some of these potential Superman: Legacy casting choices?
