Sony Pictures Reportedly Wants Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield Back for SPIDER-MAN 4
In the wake of the massive success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which brought together three generations of Spider-Man characters, fans have been eagerly awaiting news about Marvel and Sony’s next Spider-Man adventure. The rumor mill is buzzing once again, and this time, it's suggesting that Sony Pictures is looking at bringing back original big-screen Spider-Man Tobey Maguire and The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield for the highly anticipated Spider-Man 4.
In 2021, Spider-Man: No Way Home shattered expectations and became a huge superhero success. This epic crossover event saw Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reprise their iconic roles alongside Tom Holland's MCU version of the character. The film not only delighted fans but also raked in record-breaking box office numbers.
Given the monumental success of No Way Home, it's hardly surprising that Sony Pictures wants to capitalize on this next installment. According to insider Daniel Richtman, the studio wants Maguire and Garfield to join Holland in Spider-Man 4. While the project is still in early development, the prospect of seeing all three Spider-Men back together is something a lot of fans would be excited about.
Richtman also doubles down on the rumors that Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, is set to make an appearance in Spider-Man 4. However, it's worth noting that actor Vincent D'Onofrio has not yet entered talks for his return.
These are just rumors for now, but they definitely will spark some conversation and excitement among fans. It's funny because Sony Pictures can do all kinds of cool and exciting things with Maguire and Garfield’s versions of Spider-Man! I get why they would want to bring them back for another big team-up, but I don’t think they should do that. It’s already been done, what they should do is make more standalone films with these characters!
Think about this, they spent a lot of time and money making a Madame Web movie that doesn’t look good and is most likely going to be a box office disappointment. But, has they, instead, made a Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movie, audiences would be a lot more interested and excited about it and the film would most likely be a big success. Regardless, both Garfield and Maguire have previously expressed interest in returning.
One other interesting thing about this rumor is there may be a clash of creative visions. Richtman also hints at a possible conflict of interest, with Kevin Feige eager for the movie "to be more grounded, while Sony wants it to be huge." In my opinion, more grounded is the way to go.
I’m sure that Marvel and Sony will figure things out, but with the ways that superhero movies are going right now with Superhero fatigue in full swing, they’ve got to be really smart with how they approach it. Hopefully, they make the right decisions.
