Vincent D’Onofrio Shares When Marvel Decided to Make the Netflix DAREDEVIL Series Canon, but Not Everything Is Canon
Marvel Studios recently confirmed that the Marvel Netflix shows are now canon, and during a recent interview with Daredevil star Vincent D’Onofrio, he revealed when Marvel decided to make this decision and how it went down.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, D’Onofrio talked about how the Marvel executives came together during the reshoots for Daredevil: Born Again and decided to make Netflix's Daredevil canon to the MCU. He explained:
"During our restart of all the creative on Daredevil: Born Again, all the creatives got together and said, ‘Look, this is how we’ve got to do it now. So we are for sure only speaking about it in terms of being directly connected to the original Daredevil, and that’s a great thing. It brings in a lot of cool stories and all the collateral story that happened in those original three seasons.”
You’ll notice that D'Onofrio only makes mention of Netflix's Daredevil and not the other shows such as Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, or The Punisher. With The Punisher, though, he will be appearing in Daredevil: Born Again, so it would make sense that his past story arc will be important as well.
But, some additional information recently surfaced on John Rocha's podcast, where he explained that while these Netflix Marvel shows are now considered canon, not everything is being carried over. Marvel Studios will, instead, pick and choose what it wants from the past without being beholden to Marvel Television's creative decisions.
Roche said: "What was not going to be the same Daredevil from Netflix, is now going to be the same Daredevil from Netflix, with the asterisk of not everything is canon."
It’s pretty interesting to see how this has all played out. This all came after a new creative team was brought in to make a creative overhaul of Daredevil: Born Again.
Daredevil: Born Again is currently being developed by directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who worked on both Moon Knight and Loki. Dario Scardapane, who worked on Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan as well as Netflix’s Marvel show The Punisher, is the showrunner for the series.
Charlie Cox will return to the role of Matt Murdock aka Daredevil in the series, and he’ll be joined by Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk/Kingpin, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher, and Sandrine Holt as Vanessa Fisk. It also includes Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva, Nikki M. James, Michael Gaston, Arty Froushan, and Clark Johnson in undisclosed roles.
