The Next PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Movie Described as "Too Weird" by Writer Craig Mazin
Disney has been looking to develop another Pirates of the Caribbean movie for years. Over the course of that time, Disney hired the creator of HBO’s Chernobyl and The Last of Us, Craig Mazin, to develop a story for the new Pirates movie with Ted Elliott, who co-wrote the first four films in the franchise.
During an interview with The LA Times, Mazin offered a brief update on the project and he explained that when they initially pitched the idea, he didn’t think Disney would agree to it because it was “too weird.” he said:
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did! And then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”
These Pirates movies are weird in general, so I can’t help but be curious about how weird this next chapter in the franchise will be. At the same time, I’m kind of over these Pirates of the Caribbean movies and I’d be fine if we never saw another one get made.
There were reports at one point that Margot Robbie was set to star in a Pirates movie, and the plan was to replace Jack Sparrow with a female pirate named Redd. That film was being written by Bumblebee and Birds of Prey writer Christina Hodson, but it eventually was shelved.
Now, most of the reports surrounding the future of the franchise involve the possibility of getting Johnny Depp back in the role of Jack Sparrow. At least that’s what producer Jerry Bruckheimer has been pushing for. Only time will tell if that actually happens. He previously said:
"We're all working on it. We'll see how it comes out. But we're very excited. I think we'll have a great screenplay. And we're getting close."
When asked about whether he is still hoping for Depp to return, he said:
"We'll see. I would love it. I would love him in the movie. That's all I can tell you."
The question is, do audiences really want another Pirates of the Caribbean movie? I know that there are fans out there that would welcome it, but what do you all think? Mazin is a great storyteller, so this next film could be interesting if Disney actually moves forward with it.
