YELLOWJACKETS Showrunner Teases That Cannibalism is "Just The Tip of the Iceberg"
With the second season of the hit Showtime series Yellowjackets coming soon, co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco is looking to get fans pumped up for what’s coming.
The dark and twisted series centers on a high school girls’ soccer team that crash land in the woods on a plane and are stranded there for 19 months. In an effort to survive, the girls will eventually resort to cannibalism, but apparently, that’s just the beginning of what’s in store for these characters.
During a recent interview with EW, Lisco teased:
"If we do our job right, the eating of a person will not be the most transgressive thing that these young women do in the wilderness. That's just the tip of the iceberg."
He didn’t offer any other details or hint at what that could be, but it sounds like things are going to get pretty jacked up for these characters. One thing that he and the other showrunners, Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, set out to do was make Season 2 even better than Season 1, and I hope they succeed in that.
One thing that it will do is dig into the trauma of surviving the harsh wilderness. He went on to say: "If season 1 was about our teen characters learning to adapt to their harsh surroundings, season 2 is where it all just really explodes.”
Lisco went on to talk about the characters and tease their journey, saying: "Each one of them is gonna make choices that they never dreamed possible. And, and as we cut forward 25 years, we're gonna watch those terrible actions surface in ways that I would say irrevocably changed the fate of their lives."
The series is described as being “equal parts survival epic, psychological horror story, and coming-of-age drama.” The story follows “a team of wildly talented high school girls soccer players who become the (un)lucky survivors of a plane crash deep in the remote northern wilderness. The series chronicles their descent from a complicated but thriving team to savage clans, while also tracking the lives they’ve attempted to piece back together nearly 25 years later, proving that the past is never really past and what began out in the wilderness is far from over.”
The series stars Christina Ricci, Melanie Lynskey, Tawny Cypress, Ella Purnell, Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, Sammi Hanratty, Steven Krueger, Warren Kole, and Juliette Lewis. Newcomers include Elijah Wood, as Walter "a new citizen detective”, Lauren Ambrose as the adult version of Van, who you can see photos of here, and Simone Kessell, who will be playing adult Lottie. Jason Ritter also joined the cast.
