Marvel Studios Hires BEEF Series Creator To Work on THUNDERBOLTS Script
Marvel Studios has hired Lee Sung Jin, the creator and showrunner of Netflix’s Beef, to work on the script for the upcoming Thunderbolts movie. This will be his first writing credit on a feature film. He previously worked on shows such as Tuca & Bertie, Dave, and Silicon Valley.
The director of Thunderbolts, Jake Schreier, previously worked on Beef as a director, so this is a reunion for the two creative talents. Oh! And then, of course, there’s Steven Yeun, who recently jumped on board the film, he also starred in Beef. So, Thunderbolts is one big happy Beef reunion.
Lee shared with Variety: “I’m rewriting it. It’s the whole squad again. Jake asked me if I would come on board. I probably should have taken a break, but there’s a lot of themes and exciting things about the movie that I couldn’t help but sign on.”
He added: “It’s truly an honor to be part of a Marvel thing, but it is very different. One, it’s not my project, it’s Jake’s. It’s such a large scope and scale that the type of writing is very different. At the same time, the process feels the same, I’m still talking to Jake every day. … I think once you find the squad of people you love and trust and are so talented, you do everything you can to keep working with them.”
The movie has a great ensemble cast that includes Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Julie Louis-Dreyfus as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, and of course, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. Then there’s Harrison Ford, who is taking on the role of General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross who is going to be President of the United States in Captain America: New World Order. Ayo Edebiri also joined the cast in an undisclosed role.
We don’t know much about what the story for Thunderbolts will entail, but recently learned a new detail about the Thunderbolts team from Kevin Feige, and he shared that Bucky Barnes is set to lead the team in the movie.
The film is being directed by Jake Schreier (Paper Towns, Kidding), from a script by Eric Pearson (Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow) and Kurt Busiek. Thunderbolts is set to premiere on July 26th, 2023.
